UU Young Adults on CNN

CNN's 'Anderson Cooper 360' series 'What is a Christian?' features the All Souls Church Unitarian, Washington, DC Community, and makes specific reference to Young Adults being drawn to this church. The All Souls segment aired in the second hour of the show at 11pm, which you can see on YouTube: You can watch all of the segments here.  Hat tip to Darrell for this information.

UU Young Adult New Orleans Service Project

Cheryl Walker, Andrea Riquier and Li Yu are organizing a group of young adults (and folks a little older than 35) to go to New Orleans to volunteer over the MLK, Jr. Day weekend.  The plan is to leave NYC on Thursday evening (1/11) and to return on Monday afternoon (1/15).  The local UU congregations will provide housing, so all participants will have to do is to get there (flights and car rentals).  Fundraising is in the works to cover these costs. The planning committee will be ironing out the details in the coming weeks (some of which will depend on who and how many are going).

If you are interested, please contact "Li Yu" <ogien100@yahoo.com>.

Radius Futures

Radius, the regional C*UUYAN conferences, founded in 2006 and held in four locations, will be discussed at ConCentric August 17-20.  There, with the YACM Office, a determination will be made as to the plans for next year.  I have heard from several folks that the planning ideally needs to start as soon as possible, and that for this year there was a sense that more preparation was needed.  One comment was specifically around the advance notice invitation to guest speakers and workshop leaders.  Another comment about Radius was the sense that there is a reluctance to shift power from the continental clique to more local and regional bases.  This is worth exploring more, as the health and vitality of young adult and campus ministry is at stake.

Please let me know what your travel plans are even if you don’t want me to buy you a ticket, because I will fret if I don’t know that you’re taken care of. in August. And there’s still doing a lot of noisy and confusing construction at the airport.  You don’t want to get stuck there, right?  Of course not.

Make sure you have read the travel policies included at the bottom of this e-mail.

Thanks again, everyone, and I look forward to hearing from you!

2) Volunteer purchases their own ticket and is reimbursed by the YA-CM office.

You are empowered to purchase your own ticket. However you must try and buy the most affordable ticket that works with your preferred itinerary. You are welcome to extend the dates of travel to arrive before the event and/or stay longer after the event. However if the ticket price is above and beyond the average market price we will ask you to cover the difference. Once you have purchased the ticket email or mail us your itinerary and price and we will reimburse you as soon as possible (two to four weeks).

TRAVEL POLICIES:

Change in Travel

If change in travel arrangements are at the request of the coordinating staff or committee, costs associated will be paid by YA&CM-C*UUYAN. All other changes to travel will be paid by the volunteer unless otherwise approved by the coordinating staff or committee member. Please note that there is generally a $100 change fee for any airline ticket plus any difference in fare. Furthermore, standby travel is becoming more difficult and expensive for same day travel changes. Volunteers are encouraged to know their rights with the airline, bus or train company they are utilizing if applicable.

Cancelled Travel

For all cancelled travel the volunteer will be responsible for reimbursing the cost of the flight to the YA-CM Office or if the ticket can be used far a future C*UUYAN or YA&CM event the volunteer will be asked to pay for any change fees or re-booking charges. The only exceptions to this are for medical or serious personal reasons communicated with the coordinating staff or committee member. In these circumstances the cost of re-booking cancelled travel arrangements will be paid by YACM-C*UUYAN. It is essential that volunteers and the coordinating staff or committee member communicate regularly and early to confirm best travel arrangements to limit the chance of cancelled travel.

Missed Flights

It is important that all volunteers arrive for their flight at least two hours before their scheduled departure time. It is the responsibility of the traveler to arrive at the airport in time. In circumstances where the YA-CM office or C*UUYAN is responsible for your drop off at the airport and you do not arrive an hour and half before and therefore miss your flight the YA-CM office or C*UUYAN will assume responsibility. In all other circumstances it is the responsibility of the volunteer.

Survey of UU Young Adults

We invite you to take 15 minutes of your day to complete our 2006 Survey of UU Young Adults.  The survey is designed to help the UUA Office of Young Adult & Campus Ministry better serve the community.  There are 34 questions, 2 of which are open-ended inviting you to give a longer answer.  It will also help us better understand the demographics of the UU Young Adult community.

The survey will be open from June 20th, 2006 through September 8th, 2006.  Our goal is to receive 1000 responses.  To accomplish this, we need your help.  In addition to your completion of the survey, would you send this to 3 friends you know?  We seek to have all UU's age 18-35 complete the survey, regardless if they are "involved" in young adult activities.  Some of the questions are designed specifically for persons not involved, to learn more why.  A section of the survey also asks about the needs and aspirations of young adults.
Please circulate this with your local congregation and groups as you are able.  Your personal touch is a great help.
In peace,
Joseph Santos-Lyons
